This series provides young readers with an illustrated introduction to different countries of the world. The individual books illustrate the distinctive features of each country and enable children to compare their lives and customs with those of other lands and cultures. The series also aims to explain simply the social, economic and environmental issues facing each country today. This book looks at different aspects of Canada, the second largest country in the world, a land of great variety that is both modern and wild, with extremes in landscape and climate and rich in minerals, forests, wildlife and fertile farmland. The author examines topics such as Canada's history, wildlife, land and climate, daily life, education, sport and leisure, religion and festivals, agriculture, industry and government. The book also looks at current issues in Canada, such as the conflict between the fur traders of the north, conservationists and the effects of acid rain on Canadian forests and lakes. Jack Brickenden has been a newspaper, radio and TV journalist, promotion manager for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and has also written Wayland's "We Live in Canada".
